Fernald House

Although this watercolor departs from the theme of this exhibit, it was part of Haass' series of Santa Barbara paintings. This Victorian House, originally located at 422 Santa Barbara Street, was built in 1862 by Judge Charles Fernald. In 1880, the house was enlarged and remodeled into an elaborate Queen Anne structure with Gothic Revival elements. Members of the Fernald family occupied the house for 95 years. In 1958, the Santa Barbara Historical Museum acquired the building; one year later, the Museum moved it to its present site for use as a house museum.
