Description
Daniel Hill, an immigrant from Massachusetts, built this major adobe for his California-born bride, Rafaela Ortega, in 1825-26. A later owner was Captain John Wilson, whose wife, Ramona, was the mother of California Governor Romualdo Pacheco. In the 1860s the adobe was inherited by Manuela Ortega de Carrillo, wife of a town mayor. The adobe was prominent in civic life. Mrs. Esther Fiske Hammond remodeled and enlarged it in 1919-20. In the 1920s Max C. Fleischmann purchased the adobe and granted it to the Santa Barbara Foundation.
