Description
Captain Horatio Gates Trussell built this house in 1854 from adobe bricks and from wood salvaged from the shipwreck of the "SS Winfield Scott." Sheathed in wood, this adobe reflects the influence of its builder, a native of New England. Wooden clapboard was used in many adobes to protect the bricks from deterioration and to convey the appearance of "Yankee" architecture. Sarah Winchester purchased the adobe in 1882; it remained in the Winchester family until 1955 when Katherine Bagg Hastings bequeathed it to the Santa Barbara Historical Museum. The historic adobe is open to the public as a house museum.
