Title A name given to the resource California Mission Lantern Slides Description An account of the resource This set of California Mission lantern slides was acquired by the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation in 2018 from the Oberlin College Archives. A selection have been digitized and presented for public access. Lantern slides are designed to be projected on a wall or screen through a variety of "Magic Lantern" projectors, precursors to the carousel slide projectors of the late 20th century. A glass plate is coated with a light-sensitive emulsion, exposed to light filtered through a negative, developed in a chemical bath and dried. The finished positive image is covered with a protective second piece of glass and the pair is wrapped with black tape to hold them together as a single unit. Lantern slides were commonly used for entertainment and educational purposes from 18th century until the mid-20th century. This collection is mostly a study of both interior and exterior views of many California missions, from San Diego de Alcala to San Francisco Solano. Although the photos are not dated, their subject matter indicates that they were taken sometime between 1900 and the 1930s, after the missions fell into ruins but before various reconstruction and conservation projects began in earnest. There is no indication of who took the photographs, as is often the case with lantern slides that were commercially produced. As a collection, the slides are an interesting study of mission architecture: we can observe the various styles of the missions, such as neoclassical and Baroque. They also provide a larger context for the missions as they appeared in the early twentieth century: distressed and ruined by neglect, earthquakes, weather, and human hands. They also provide a before-and-after comparison to study the preservation movement and efforts to reconstruct the missions in the first half of the twentieth century. Title A name given to the resource Evelyn Foxen Oral History Description An account of the resource Evelyn Rose Foxen was a descendent of Benjamin Foxen of Rancho Tinaquaic. She grew on the property of the Maria Romero Lopez adobe, one of Santa Barbara's oldest homes built in 1855. Her grandfather, Salvador Foxen, raised her while her parents, Robert Foxen and Marjorie West, traveled around the state as well-known musicians. Evelyn recalls a happy childhood while growing up in Santa Barbara. After a brief move south as an adult, she moved back to her beloved home and began raising her family. During WWII she was a regular "Rosie the Riveter", and landed a job as supervisor of the microwave division at Raytheon in Goleta. Evelyn is able to share priceless stories of what Santa Barbara was like in the 20's and all the way up through the war. Evelyn had the privilege of traveling with some of the bands at a very young age and even got to appear at a famous venue her father played at. Clip 2: During the majority of Evelyn's youth in Santa Barbara she was raised by her grandfather, Salvador Foxen. She recalls following Salvador to big estates on his gardening jobs. Title A name given to the resource Gary Chafe Oral History Description An account of the resource Born on September 1st, 1937 in Los Angeles, California, Gary Ray Chafe was the eldest son of Raymond Chafe and Edmee Silva. In the summer of 1947, Chafe’s father relocated the entire family to Santa Barbara following a job assignment with the Socal Edison Electric Company. Chafe’s passion for art began following the aftermath of World War II when he observed an exhibit of artwork liberated from the Nazis. He graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1955 and went on to attend Santa Barbara City College. After graduation, Chafe did a variety of jobs such as being a courier for the United Postal Office in the late 1960’s and teaching at the Adult Education Program when it was located on the Santa Barbara School of the Arts campus. His passion for art would ultimately lead him back to being a self-employed painter. Chafe has had a long relationship with the Presidio Neighborhood, including running an art studio on the 200 block of East Canon Perdido Street, and living in the apartments at the top of the Whittaker building. Following World War II, an exhibit of art liberated from the Nazis inspired Gary Chafe to pursue a career in art. Clip 2: Gary discusses the creation of “New” Chinatown in the Presidio neighborhood after the 1925 earthquake. Clip 3: Gary and friends work to make Santa Barbara bike-friendly. Clip 4: During the 1960’s, Gary Chafe was employed as a postal courier for the post office. Couriers during this period were able to use the bus system to complete their routes, enabling them to enjoy the beautiful side of the city during their work day. Clip 5: Set Designer: Chafe designed sets for the Alhecama Theatre alongside Mr. Freeman, the leader of the Alhecama players. Clip 6: First Residence: Chafe’s first residence and gallery was located above the Town Market in the Presidio Area across from Jimmy’s Oriental Garden.
